Each year many organizations partner together in an effort to urge Americans to become more prepared. The American Red Cross of the National Capital Area’s mission is to help our community learn how to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters (natural or human-caused) and other life-threatening emergencies that can strike at any place, any time.

Scroll down to read a personal message from Heidi Klum:

I took an American Red Cross CPR class so that I’d be prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. On the runway and off, at work or hanging out with my kids, I want to be ready to help if something happened.

From June 1 to June 7, you can get ready too—right in your hometown.

The first week of June is National CPR/AED Awareness Week, and the Red Cross is marking it by holding CPR/AED classes, demonstrations, and other events all around the country.

It’s a great opportunity to get prepared.

Thousands of lives—from infants to grandparents—are saved every year because someone took a CPR class or learned how to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED), which can be used to help save someone who has gone into cardiac arrest.
Auf Wiedersehen,

If more people know how to perform these important skills, more lives will be saved.

You have the chance next week to learn these skills and be ready to help your loved ones during an emergency. Let’s be prepared together! So are you in, or are you out?

World Malaria Day

April 25, 2009

The Red Cross has a history of helping people around the world. World Malaria Day is one of those initiatives.

Malaria is a deadly parasitic disease that transmits from mosquitos to humans. It can be life-threatening if infected and untreated. This endemic disease continues to affect over 300 million people globally, resulting in one million deaths – 90 percent of which are children.

Education provides people with an understanding of the disease, how it is transmitted, and awareness of the symptoms.

Preventive care provides people with resources to protect themselves.

Treatment provides services to monitor, evaluate, and care for those infected.

You can HELP.
